In San Diego, garden centers are busiest on spring weekends, when new stock arrives and popular plants sell out; weekday mornings are calmer and staff have more time to answer questions. Ask which plants are hardy for your USDA zone in California, whether trees and shrubs carry a replacement guarantee (one year is common), and whether the nursery delivers and plants large items. Fall is the best planting season for many trees and perennials, and end-of-season sales are common. Many nurseries close or shorten hours in winter, so check the listing for current hours and Google rating before you go.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. On most of those days it is open 8 amβ5 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (619) 295-2808. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, missionhillsnursery.com.

San Diego is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Traffic in San Diego peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Very disappointed. First the people seemed a little annoyed and dismissive at all the questions I had. I went in looking for native plants and by their recommendations I took some plants home. Upon doing my own research on the plants, they were not actually native to the area especially the milkweed. It was actually tropical milkweed that is harmful to the monarchs by the dangerous spores on their leaves. I also obtained a sage that was also not native to the area. When I inquired about the strawberry plants, they didnβt know the species and couldnβt help with finding a viable one. So it seems maybe they do not have a grasp on the true species of the area but an idea. As a nursery I expect the opposite,so I will not be coming back here anymore.

It was my first visit today, and I loved it. Iβm new to San Diego and love exploring nurseries, theyβre my happy place. I was greeted right away and even learned a little about the history of the nursery, which made the visit feel special. The plants were beautiful and healthy, and the people working there were kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable. As a business owner, I truly appreciate great employees because they reflect the heart of the business. This place clearly has both beautiful plants and wonderful people. Highly recommend!

There is a hidden gem at Mission Hills! Please check out the delightful 3rd space onsite - Through the Fold, Books + Community. Itβs such a happy, vibrant and welcoming little stop. Grab a gift, hang out and watch for the chickens.

I bought a plant and a pot at mission hills nursery. The plant did not survive. It died within a week. I took it back and the man told me I overwatered it. He said it was my fault. I am very good with plants. I showed the man photos of the plants I have in the house. I will add photos of the plants I have so you can see the quality of the plants I have. I ended up taking my business to home depot to buy a new plant. I asked them when I bought a new plant and they shared with me that they did guarantee the plant. I am sorry to not support my local nursery

This is such a wonderful nursery that really invites the Community to come and explore, and even really welcomes children! They have a little toy chest with books and toys! An adorable chicken house, and benches spread throughout for enjoyment of the plants and trees! The fountains, chimes and ceramics and succulents are our favorites! There are expert super knowledgeable nursery associates to help with all of your gardening needs, small or large scale! Come for a visit and stay for a while!! You can even grab a free mini pop on the way out!!
